Things to do in County Durham

Durham Cathedral & Castle - No visit to the north east would be complete without a trip to the historic city of Durham where you can see this magnificent World Heritage Site. Durham Cathedral is one of the great buildings of Europe and is open every day of the year with free entry for all.

National Museum of the Royal Navy - Based in Hartlepool, this museum provides a fascinating journey through time set in an authentically recreated 1800s quayside. You can experience the mighty fighting ships, gain a powerful insight into the life of sailors from Admiral Nelson’s time and see what life was like on board the HMS Trincomalee, the oldest warship still afloat in the UK.

Beamish Museum - This award winning open-air museum in the Vale of Durham vividly recreates 19th and early 20th century life in north east England. Set over 350 acres, Beamish brings history to life with a full living picture into the past. A yearly pass costs less than £20 for adults including special e vents and is open all year round.

Crook Hall & Gardens - A magnificent example of 13th century architecture, this Grade 1 listed medieval hall provides a spectacular backdrop to the stunning gardens. Crook Hall attracts visitors from all over the world to soak up the idyllic English atmosphere over a home-made cream tea in the picturesque courtyard or in front of a log fire in the Georgian dining room.

Sights and Attractions

Jacksons Wharf - Based on the Hartlepool Marina with perfect views of the HMS Trincomalee, Jackson’s Wharf is one of the most popular establishments in the region serving a delicious range of great value food and cask ales from Marston’s five breweries. With a warm, welcoming environment and the soothing sounds of the sea you’ll want to visit time and time again.

The Almighty Cod - Rated as one of the very best fish and chip shops in the north east, The Almighty Cod in Seaton Carew never fails to attract the crowds. With a restaurant and a takeaway, this traditional chippy is renowned for their generous portion sizes, traditional cooking methods and fantastic selection of side orders.

Casa Del Mar - For something a little bit different in Hartlepool, the Casa Del Mar overlooks the marina and serves a fantastic combination of Spanish, Mexican and North African tapas dishes. The restaurant is also famed for their delicious Sangria and wide selection of exotic cocktails.

Maximo’s Italian Restaurant - Based right on the doorstep of Castledene Holiday Park, Maximo’s offers authentic Italian cuisine at very reasonable prices. The restaurant has regular specials on a daily basis and also offers delicious home-cooked Sunday lunches at the weekend.

Happy family in a restaurant

Golf - We are lucky enough to be located close to a wide selection of excellent golf courses, with the Castle Eden Golf Club just minutes away and one in Hartlepool itself. Slightly further afield is the historic Seaton Carew Golf Club, the 10th oldest course in the UK, providing a tough coastal links challenge.

Beaches - The north east coastline has an abundance of beautiful beaches where you can relax in the summer and enjoy some stunning walks during the winter. There are over 15 different beaches along the Durham Heritage Coast with each one offering something a little different, so you’ll never be short on choice.

Durham Dales - One of the most picturesque areas in the north east, the Durham Dales feature some truly breath-taking scenery. The landscape is made up of rolling hills, lush green countryside, magnificent waterfalls and dense forests all combining to make this one of the most unique areas in the UK.

Summerhill Country Park - This beautiful park is both a nature reserve and an outdoor activity centre offering something the whole family can enjoy. On the park you can find various sculptures, rare wildlife, two children’s play areas, a free to use BMX track and replica of an iron age roundhouse.
